************** * July 2005 * ************** ••• A report on EUG (2nd - 3rd) ••• By Danielle
The Eastern University Games (EUG) are held every year in July and are attended by universities in New South Wales and Queensland. Many different sports, including badminton, participate
in the Games which are a qualifier for universities who wish to attend the Australian University Games (AUG) held in September
each year. This year the Eastern University Games (EUG) were due to be held in Tamworth.
However, due to inadequate facilities in Tamworth, EUG badminton was hosted by the University
of New South Wales in Sydney.
On the 2nd and 3rd of July five men and five women from the University
of Wollongong Badminton Club represented the University at the Games.
This year
6 universities took part in EUG badminton, including the University of Sydney (USyd), University of New South Wales (UNSW),
University of Technology Sydney (UTS), University of Wollongong (UOW), Macquarie University (MQU) and the University of Newcastle
(UN), though UN had only a men’s team. Over the last few years UNSW, whose players have often been members of the NSW
state team, has dominated EUG badminton, though UTS and MQU have been strong competitors also.
Members
of the UOW team had been training under the supervision of Ignatius Gan, for three months prior to the event. This involved
training all players in both singles and doubles, as well as improving their general fitness. At the EUG, teams play three
singles and 2 doubles matches against each participating University but there is no mixed doubles event.
Unfortunately,
this year the UOW team did not have great success at the Games. The UOW women’s team, lead by Danielle Durland, failed
to win against any of the four universities they played against, though they fought hard and often only lost by a narrow margin.
The UOW men’s team, lead by Kevin Wong, had more success however and beat the Newcastle men’s team 4 games to
1, but were defeated by the other 4 universities they played. Over all, EUG badminton was won by UNSW this year.
Both the
men’s and women’s teams from Wollongong University still qualified for the Australian University Games this year.
However, given the obvious strength of the opposition, it has been decided that the Club will not be entering AUG (held in
Brisbane) this year. All players who represented the University should be congratulated though (Kevin, Andy, Ken, Glen, Endy,
Pearl, Twiggy, Danielle, Wendy & Lynsia) on their commitment to training and competing in the Games. Special thanks also
to Iggy Gan for giving up his time and energy to train the UOW team, and to UOW Club president, Wilford Lie, for driving the
team up and back on both days of the competition.
Having won
the Australian Uni Games badminton many years ago, the University of Wollongong hopes to send a team to compete in the Uni
Games next year, and maybe one day we’ll win back the title. The Uni Games have always been an important part of the
sporting and cultural life of Australian Universities and we can only hope that the proposed Voluntary Student Unionism legislation
will not mean the death of this event for future generations of university students.

Dear All,
I am very glad to tell you that both Iggy and Danielle have received the 2004 Sport Recognition Award. The awards have been
gifted by URAC to individuals each year to honour their great contributions to a sport club in which they are involved. In
the past we have only had Limei (2002) and Danielle (2003) receiving the same award. A Blue Award based on personal achievements
was also given to an Indonesian student who won a badminton championship in AUG in 1997. (I cannot remember his name as I
do not know him, unfortunately.) We are very proud to have two of our members rewarded at the same time, and I really think
that they are deserved for the prestigious awards.
******** Congratulation to Iggy and Danielle! ********
To our great surprise, our club was also given the 2004 UOW Best Improved Club Award, along with a large (enough to contain
5 little beer for celebration) trophy and a $150 1x3 square feet cheque. This is the second time the club was honoured by
this award. The first award was given in 1997. The new award was based on our high numbers of members (growing from 78 in
2003 to 140 in 2004) and excellent in club management and promotion in 2004. These are mainly the collective contribution
of the last committee in which Thuy was a president and Danielle was initially a secretary. After the 2004 AGM, Thuy remain
as a president until February, Danielle was a Deputy, Minyan was a Treasurer, and Twiggy was a secretary. The honour should
also be given to our wonderful coach Iggy, who, being ex-champions in single, double and mixed, has been a spiritual-like
symbol and model to excite us to improve our skills in the past. After all, this is a collective achievement accomplished
by all of us as a family and hence is an honour to an entity, not individuals. Our thanks must be given especially to those
who have been helping the club selflessly in many different ways, from setting up the facilities to picking up loose feathers
on the floor, from kindly coaching less skilful players to even giving a friendly and sincere smile to beginners. We must
also appreciate the consistent long-term selfless contribution from people like Iggy, Danielle, Raj and Richards, though it
was given for the performance in 2004.
******** Congratulation to you all, my dear friends! ********
Terry has taken a few photos, and will put them in our website soon.
The 2004 UOW Best Club Award was given to the UOW Hocky Club for the excellent sport achievements of its teams. This is unfortunately
beyond our reach at this stage, as we have been facing competitors who are really too strong for us to beat.
Finally, best luck to all students who will have their exams in the next two weeks.
Yours very sincerely,
Wilford
PS: We will have our last playing session for this semester this Wednesday with three courts, from 3:30 to 6:30pm. After this
the URAC Hall will be officially closed for the student exams for two weeks. The playing sessions will start again from Sunday,
the 19th of June.

••• A report on University of Sydney Double (16th - 17th) •••
By Twiggy Wu
Nine of our players took part in this events. We all got defeated in the tournament yesterday. However, we all learn a lot
from the others. For myself, i learn how insufficient my skills are. If we plan to participate in the EUG and AUG, we got
to be trained really hard to improve our skills. Winning is good but losing let us understand ourself better. I strongly
encourage people to participate in games like that.
••• A report on ACT Open (9th - 10th) •••
By Danielle Murphy Durland (and Terry Wong for the result confirmation)
Just thought I'd give you an update on our progress at the ACT Open on 9th and 10th. It was a really good weekend, and we
all had a wonderful experience. The people were really friendly, and we had some good games, it was very well run.
Almost everyone walked away with a trophy. These are the results:
- Richard & Emily got Runner-up in Grade C mixed doubles.
- Emily also got Runner-up in Grade D doubles.
- Danielle won Grade A doubles with her partner Amanda, who she met there.
- Danielle got Runner-up in the Grade A singles.
- Andy and Joe (Danielle's friend) got Runner Up in Grade A men doubles.
- Terry and Pearl won in Grade D mixed doubles.
- Terry got Runner-up in the Grade C singles.
- Pearl got Runner-up in the Grade C singles.
Also, while I was down in Canberra, Shuen Joe, who ran the comp down there mentioned to me that they are going to be organising
an inter-club challenge on the 14th of May. He said usually they only invite Canberra clubs to participate, but that he wanted
to invite our club as well. Basically you enter in groups of either:
- 3 men
- 2 women or
- 2 men and a woman
We can enter as many groups of these as we like, and if people play in the '3 men' or '2 women' category, then it's free for
them to participate in the '2 men & a woman' category as well. Points are awarded something like this:
- 3 points for the winners
- 2 points for the runners-up
- 1 point for participation
So in theory he said, if you have a lot of people participating from your Club, you could still win the challenge by getting
heaps of participation points. Anyway, it sounded like fun. Let us see who's interested and I'll discuss the details with
everyone at the committee meeting.

••• A report on UNSW Open (13th - 14th) •••
By Richard Miller
Over the weekend of 13th/14th March several of our Club members competed in the Graded Competition run by UNSW Badminton Club
in their Sports Centre at Kensington Campus in Sydney. This is one of several competitions held by different Clubs in and
around Sydney through the year which are a great opportunity for Club members with an interest in a competitive game and the
chance to improve their play; to test their skills against very different opposition.
There were a large number of entries boosted by members of the State Youth Training Squad and all grades --- Open, A, B, C
and D were run in singles, doubles and mixed. Danielle and Indrati competed in the B Grade Ladies Doubles. It was their last
chance to play competitively together before Indrati's return to Indonesia on completion of her studies. Their result of won
1, lost 1 was not quite enough to get them to the top of their Round Robin Group but they performed well in a high standard
competition. Danielle also tested herself in the B Grade singles.
In some competitions the D Grade can be a 'beginner grade' but with so many budding juniors on this occasion the standard
was quite good. Several Club players tried their skills, Pearl, Emily, Terry and Richard in different combinations. Best performed
were Pearl & Emily who are to be congratulated for winning the D Grade Ladies Doubles Competition and we all enjoyed their
success as part of The UOW Badminton Club.
Club President Wilford, supported the players by travelling up to UNSW with us and taking much footage of incriminating video
and no doubt will be closely analysing the results to identify weaknesses in our shots and court coverage. He will be tactful
enough to overlook that some failed to achieve better results due mostly to fatigue and aging! We were able to pool vehicles
for the journey and share the friendship of the journey going up as well as being entertained by Pearl sharing some Guilin
and 'Gong Gossip' (Part 1) during the trip while for the return journey some detoured via Eat Street and those more weary
soles, rested, recuperated, bathed in the shared glory of our limited successes and were again entertained by 'Pearls from
The Orient'(Part 2).
On Sunday the A and C Grade games were held. We had hoped that Mehdi would be representing The Club but due to his partner
being struck down by a mystery illness he was unable to participate so Terry and Ken were left to represent The Club in Sunday's
competition. While we were pleased to have their company to share The Club's Welcome Lunch after our Sunday morning social
play their unexpectedly early return was not a good sign for the day's competition results.
Over all, a good weekend had had by those who attended, although the large number of participants meant the games were running
later than scheduled.
During the year there will be more Competitions for Club members to join in. There are many benefits in trying out in these
competitions --- it will develop your standard of play, develop your interest and enthusiasm for badminton, it builds friendship
and support amongst those Club members who participate, gives us added experience from games against different players in
a competitive atmosphere and gives you chance to travel and see new place and venues and get to see how competitions are organised
and run so that next year you will be able to stand as our Club's Competition Co-ordinator! In reflection of an earlier competition
Mehdi writes 'I really enjoyed it. Its very fun and lovely. I think it's very useful to get some experiences to improve my
badminton skills. I would like to play again in the other competitions and I will try to recommend the competition to our
Club players'. Why don't you try it and see? If you need a partner, see Terry, he's a very good matchmaker, and transport
can be arranged. Talk to Terry or any of your committee members before the next competition forms are due. You've got to be
in it to win it but even the 'also rans' have a good time.
